5 Best Podcasts for Women

By | All Posts, Friday Favorites, Reviews, Self Improvement | No Comments

I regularly share podcasts and individual episodes to my list of friends who subscribe to my Fired Up Friday email. In that email, I share a random list of my five favorite things (including podcasts and books) of that week. You can see previously listed items in my Friday Favorites blog series.

This year, I’m changing my approach. Instead of blogging the entire list each week I’d like to expand on one item from the list. This week I shared my new found love for the Rich Bitch podcast. I thought it would be fun to expand on this topic and share my top five favorite podcasts for women.

A Week of Hard Labor – Program Review

By | Fitness & Health, Reviews | No Comments

My husband, Darren, and I love to lift weights together. We found a great set of dumbbells for a great price on Craigslist several years ago and have been using the same workout program at home ever since. Even though he has a gym membership and I own a fitness studio we still like to lift at home together.

Our program of choice is Body Beast. It’s a program created by trainer Sagi Kalev that we stream on demand through Beachbody On Demand. Body Beast is a 90-day weight training program. I graduated from this program shortly after it was released a few years ago. Now, we just pick and choose which workouts we want to do each week. We typically lift 3x each week and mix it up between upper body, lower body, and core work.

I’ve been anxiously awaiting for a Body Beast 2 program to be released (who knows if it ever will!) so I was stoked to hear about “A Week of Hard Labor!” Which is basically five new workouts with Sagi. We were all in on this challenge!

Each workout is around 45 minutes and requires some equipment. It’s nice to have a bench but you could use a stability ball. We used weights ranging from 5lbs to 50lbs. Resistance bands are nice to have handy too! If you do not have a lot of equipment I would start adding what you can when you can. Our home gym has come together in bits and pieces. We share a lot of equipment and trade of sets when we need to.

We started the week out with a chest and back workout followed by leg, core, upper body, and finished with a total body ladder workout. The shortest workout was the 30-minute core and the longest was the 50-minute total body. I think it’s safe to say the chest workout was my favorite and the total body was my least favorite.

I was thankful to have Darren in the dungeon with me during that ladder workout. A ladder workout is where you complete a set of exercises and then repeat each exercise by adding one rep. We did eight sets and then went back down the ladder decreasing reps by one rep until we were back at one. It was brutal but totally worth it.

A Week of Hard Labor – Get to Work!

I’d recommend this week long program for anyone who consistently lifts weights but wants to change it up and challenge their body. There is a modifier in the videos to follow if you don’t have a lot of equipment or need to take it down a notch. I really like Sagi as a trainer too. He makes me laugh with his commentary and strong Israeli accent. He likes to crack jokes but they don’t always make sense which is hilarious to me.

I like that they have women in the workouts too. There are no women in the Body Beast program so it’s nice to have the ladies in the Hard Labor workouts to follow along with!

Beachbody On Demand is the best bang for your buck when it comes to exercising at home. If you like to have guidance, variety, and results you cannot go wrong with BOD. Darren and I both have Beachbody Coach accounts and highly recommend it, if anything, for the discounts! If you’re interested in streaming your workouts and gaining access to over 600 different workouts from home you should definitely check it out. You can stream from your computer, phone, tablet, and basically get it done from ANYWHERE!

I’m always here to help support and coach you through any of the programs! Grab a BOD Challenge Pack and you’ll instantly have access to everything for a YEAR! Your All-Access Challenge Pack also comes with a bag of Shakeology. SCORE! Shakeology is something Darren and I also drink daily. If you need a recipe this is my go-to.

Thanks for checking out my review on A Week of Hard Labor. I am excited to see what special challenges they throw at us next! Get BOD so you can jump in and join us next time! We have an awesome community group on Facebook for all of our friends who use BOD.

I’m Down 8 Pounds After My 3 Day Cleanse!

By | Fitness & Health, Reviews | No Comments

I’m sick of feeling BLAH and am taking on the challenge eating WHOLE for 30 solid days.

While planning the journey into this Whole 30 adventure I decided to start with a cleanse. I’ve been going overboard with the processed food, sugar, and starchy carbs. I eat our more than I eat at home. I can feel AND see the effects. My skin started breaking out, random aches and pains, restless sleep, low energy throughout the day, and out of control cravings! I go through this cycle from time to time. I can see a pattern so I know I need to change a few habits for GOOD.

I eat pretty healthy by most standards and follow a vegan lifestyle. I still find myself craving and caving to complete junk. YES! There is plenty of vegan junk food!

I also found myself slipping backward with the habits I was so close to breaking. Things like finishing the kids snacks, binging on chocolate, eating out more than once a week (sometimes more than once a day!) and sugary coffees. Ohhhhhhh the sugary coffees. Can you hear my sugar dragon ROARING???

I kicked off my Whole 30 with a three day cleanse. I chose to do Beachbody’s 3 Day Refresh. I’m more familiar with this program and trust the quality of ingredients because I trust the Beachbody brand. I have done this cleanse before but it has been a few years.

The 3-Day Refresh is a simple, straightforward program that will help cleanse your body and improve the way you feel without starving yourself.

Unlike juice cleanses or liquid fasts which tend to be high in sugar and low in protein (leaving you feeling weak, hungry, and sluggish), this program supports your metabolism while nourishing your vital organs.

For 3 days I followed the program with 3 shakes a day, a fiber drink, plenty of water, plus fresh fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats throughout the day to help keep my energy and metabolism going!

I do not own a scale and it had been a few months since I had weighed myself. I was a bit stunned to see I was up another 10lbs. I’m not gonna lie, this brought my mood down for a good day. Then I reminded myself that it takes about two weeks of good solid clean eating to bounce back! I found my fire and dropped 8lbs on the Refresh!

By day 4 I was SUPER pumped to get into my WHOLE 30.

"Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going." -Jim Rohn

So here is what I had for the first three days! Not too much of anything but that’s exactly what my body needed. A BREAK!

My favorite meal by far was the coconut steamed veggies!

This recipe is so freaking easy.

Simply, boil 1/2 cup of water in a sauce pan.
Chop broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower.
Add the veggies to the boiling water for 5-7 minutes until soft.
Drain the water, add 1/2 tsp of coconut oil, season to taste.

SIMPLE AND DELICIOUS!

I definitely think I made the right move starting the Whole 30 with the 3 Day Refresh. I felt so excited for ALL of the options that became available on day 4. I would recommend giving yourself a week to prepare before starting either program.

Check out the 3 Day Refresh

I’ll definitely be doing the Refresh again in a few months. Losing eight pounds is awesome but by cutting the processed junk I FEEL better physically. I can only imagine how great I will feel at the end of the 30 days. I imagine I won’t want to stop!

Why I’m Addicted to Snapchat

How to use snapchat

I’m addicted to Snapchat!

I’m totally geeked out over new apps like Snapchat. It’s FUN! I’m excited to wake up each morning and see the filters of the day. I’m excited to catch up with friends and family. I’m excited to communicate quickly and in a fun new way! I feel like people are more authentic on Snapchat than other social media platforms.

Unlike Facebook and Instagram your Snapchat posts disappear. I find myself curating posts for other platforms because I know it will BE THERE indefinitely. I want my words to be perfect. I want the picture to be perfect. With Snapchat I can post and go! Because it’s in real time it feels more authentic. I find more entertainment on Snapchat than anything else. We get quick little snapshots throughout the day of the people we choose to follow.

People lead very entertaining lives. I watch Snapchat each night like it’s reality TV. Except it IS. And the reality stars are MY people. I love it.

If you’re still trying to figure it out watch this quick tutorial!

Once you’re all signed up follow me! Check out a few of my other favorite accounts to follow too.

Kate Hudson

I’m such a fan girl. I love her romantic comedies and I love her on Snapchat! She snaps behind the scenes, family stuff, and goes back and forth with her brother Oliver. (Who is equally great to follow!)

Chris D’Elia

The comedian that keeps me laughing. He’s random, always cracking hilarious jokes, and has cute dogs.

Chrissy Teigen

I was not much of a Chrissy Teigen fan until I started following her on Snapchat. I’ve seen her a few times dancing behind the DJ booth on Lip Sync Battle and knew she was married to John Legend other than that I did not know much about her. I LOVE following her snaps in the kitchen, with her cute new baby, and out with friends!

Gwen Stefani

Duh. She’s like the duchess of my generation. How can you NOT love Gwen Stefani!?!

Reese Witherspoon

She shares behind the scenes action on set of her movies, clothing line, and family. She seems just as amazing in real life as she does on the big screen!

If you want to see what’s happening with your friends jump on Snapchat. I’m totally addicted! You’ll see me snapping fitness, family, and FUN! It’s a inside peek of my day to day life!

Natural Low Carb Snack

Natural Low Carb Snack | Pai Popcorn Review

By | Nutrition & Recipes, Reviews | No Comments

NO artificial sweeteners or ingredients of any kind!

Are you on the hunt for healthy snack ideas? Are you addicted to popcorn? For me, the answer is YES and YES! So, I was thrilled to test out the variety of Pai Popcorn flavors from Silver Fern Brand. The company sent a box of goodies, and all they wanted in return was some honest feedback. Let’s DO THIS!

It’s not always easy to find healthy low-carb snack options. Especially TASTY snacks.
Our flavor options included Movie Theatre, Sweet Kettle Corn, Sweet Cheddar Jalapeno, and Crunchy Caramel Corn. My son, DJ, and I ripped into the Sweet Kettle Corn immediately after opening the box. I asked DJ how it compared to the popcorn he had at the movie theatre the night before. He reported, with a mouth full of popcorn, that it was not as sweet. We still managed to eat the entire bag.

I decided to save the other options for our day at the lake. I knew I would have hungry mouths begging for snacks!

The Silver Fern website offers nutritional info including the fact that the Pai Popcorn is GMO free, free of any artificial sweeteners, and has only 3-6g net carbs, depending on the flavor. This would not be a vegan snack option for me but works for my family!

We really enjoyed the Pai Popcorn as a snack at home and on the go! You can purchase all four flavors directly through the Silver Fern Brand website or through Amazon. We give it a thumbs up!

Do you have a favorite popcorn flavor? Leave me a comment below and let me know! I could swim in Sweet Kettle Corn!
