7 Yoga Essentials

If you’re looking for a few tools to have some fun with on your mind body journey I’ve got you covered in today’s blog!

I’ve been practicing pretty regularly for ten years now. I started getting more serious about my yoga practice throughout this past year. I enrolled in a 200 hour yoga teacher training back in September and have definitely found a few props and accessories that I love bringing into my practice.

Now, granted, you can get your yoga on with nothing but your heart and soul. You don’t need a mat, a class, a teacher, or any props. Yoga can be done anywhere, at anytime, simply by getting quiet with yourself and focusing on the breath. Getting present with ourselves is truly what it’s all about.

Some of these items might seem a bit pricey but when it comes to things like your yoga mat you really do get what you pay for. I buckled down and dropped about $70 on the mat listed below and I LOVE IT. I have no doubt it will last me many many years. I asked a friend to test drive hers out one day during class and was sold within five minutes. No slip. No slide. If you’re just getting started with yoga and want to get a feel for it first you can also find decent yoga mats at Ross, Target, or any local sporting good store.

For everything else, I’d say shop around, read reviews, and ask your yogi lover friends what props they use. These items make an AWESOME gift for your yogi loving mom, friend or, sister!

  1. A yoga mat is nice to have. Bonus if you can get a carrying bag or strap.
  2. A nice firm cork yoga block, as seen on my Friday Favorite’s list, is a definite bonus if you’re tall or if you need more flexibility, assistance with balance, and also makes for a nice meditation spot.
  3. Yoga straps are great for stretching and assisting with reach. There are a ton of Youtube videos for how to use a yoga strap too!
  4. Mat spray is great to have in your bag or with your mat. Spray down your mat after each practice to keep it fresh and disinfected.
  5. A foam roller is a must for pretty much everyone not just yogis.
  6. Yoga socks help you from slipping and sliding on your mat.
  7. Yoga blankets rock! I keep one in my car at all times. You never know when you’ll bust out a picnic but these are also great for shoulder stands, savasana, and under the knees.

I regularly share podcasts and individual episodes to my list of friends who subscribe to my Fired Up Friday email. In that email, I share a random list of my five favorite things (including podcasts and books) of that week. You can see previously listed items in my Friday Favorites blog series.

This year, I’m changing my approach. Instead of blogging the entire list each week I’d like to expand on one item from the list. This week I shared my new found love for the Rich Bitch podcast. I thought it would be fun to expand on this topic and share my top five favorite podcasts for women.

I love using the Audible app to listen to audiobooks and I use either iTunes or the Podcast app to listen to podcasts. A simple search in your app store will lead you to several free options so that you can listen to.

It’s All Happening! Friday Favorites

If you’re subscribed to my list then you are already very familiar with my Friday Favorites. This is a list that I send out every Friday via email to my friends with five random favorites. Things like my favorite apps, kitchen gadgets, recipes, workout songs, you get the point. It’s totally random and is usually based off whatever I’m excited about that week!

Addicted to Aerial Yoga

I put aerial yoga on my vision board a few years ago with no idea on how, if, or when it would ever come to fruition. The thought of taking and teaching aerial yoga at Fired Up Fitness sounded like a DREAM! Well, dreams come true! I manifested that shiz into reality. A local aerial training popped up on my radar back in May. I took a leap and registered for the training.

I then put it out on Facebook as a Birthday wish to bring aerial yoga to FUF. Within a few days my friends, family, and Facebook followers pitched in enough money to buy and install ALL of the hammocks! I have THE best people in my life! I am SO blessed. I recently installed one at home so that I can practice and play ANYTIME I want. I am ADDICTED!

200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training

This is something that has been on my mind for many many years. I’ve been waiting for the right time, the right teacher, and the right training. Everything fell into place perfectly a few months ago when my good friend Joseph reached out about his upcoming training course. I am SUPER pumped to take my yoga practice to the next level by getting a proper education. I’ll be spending the next six months taking my 200-hour yoga teacher training and I am beyond excited!

Fired Up Fitness

We recently celebrated 3 years of business at Fired Up Fitness! There have been so many ups and downs as a brick and mortar business owner but I would not change a thing.

Any time I start to feel defeated I am instantly reminded of the blessings and lives that are being impacted. We opened our doors with about 30 members signed up. We’ve grown to almost 200 members in 3 short years!

Our members are the most loyal, generous, and fun loving people I could have ever wished for. Owning a fitness studio is a true labor of love and it’s comforting knowing that I’m never alone. Our staff has grown from a handful to almost two dozen! The space we have created is straight up magical.

Making Shifts

I needed to change things up and challenge myself so I decided to do the new Beachbody program The Shift Shop. The program is three weeks and the timing was perfect because we had three weeks before leaving for the beach!

It’s been a while since I’ve finished a Beachbody program start to finish. Body Beast was the last one I completed and that’s been a few years. This was my big M-O! I did not care so much about losing weight I simply wanted to finish what I started. I stacked up layers upon layers of accountability and pushed play every damn day!

I was happy to lose inches and dropped 5lbs in the process. I felt a lot better about myself on that beach too! The workouts reminded me of athletics and definitely challenged me but not SO hard that I could’nt complete the exercises. This program is for beginners and fitness pros alike! There is a modifier to follow if you cannot keep up with the trainer or need to bring it down a notch which was totally helpful for me personally. If you need a new challenge try The Shift Shop!

A Sober September

My next personal challenge will be a sober September. I did this last year and loved the results. My challenge to you is to pick one vice and abstain for 30 days. It can be alcohol, coffee, fast food, sugar, you name it!

I’ll be giving up cocktails, coffee, and cannabis. All things that I dabble with but are not good for me. I feel like if I want to be a clear channel for all things good then I need to clean up my system and strengthen my self-control.

Vegan Vibe Tribe

Over the past few weeks, I’ve crossed paths with more and more people trying to eat more of a plant based diet. This is SO exciting for me! I remember when I decided to give up meat and become a vegetarian I had no clue what to do or where to go for info. I spent hours and hours researching the internet, watching YouTube videos, and tried to find community groups for support. When I decided to take it a step further and eat more of a vegan type diet I gave up ALL animal products including eggs and dairy. I started a list of resources to share with others who were following the same path.

I recently started a private Facebook support group for anyone wanting to eat fewer animal products and more plants! The group is growing fast and has been an awesome place to share my findings. If you have any interest please feel free to join us! We are The Vegan Vibe Tribe!

My Weekly Outlet

I am still wildly passionate about dancing. I get to teach my favorite class a few times a week at Fired Up Fitness! I love seeing women come in feeling nervous and self-conscious only to walk out standing a little taller and feeling WAY more confident. It’s AWESOME to make an impact on someone’s day. I look forward to the classes every single week! I know I’m not the only one.

My Carb Queens

I’ve been developing this program over the past year and am SO proud of the impact it’s having on the ladies who step up to join. My Queens are getting amazing results, liberating major poundage, and dropping dress sizes. I love to teach! I’ve been sharing the basics of macros, carb-cycling, and intermittent fasting to dozens of women helping them gain control of their schedule, workouts, and nutrition. The best part, we do it ALL online!

Moto Mom

The most exciting weekends are when we are racing! Bailey and DJ are both actively racing in the TORN Offroad Series and CRUSHING! I could not be more proud of these kids. Motocross is the most intense cardio workout out there. They are full throttle for a full 60 minutes non-stop which means their heart rate is racing the entire time too! It’s pretty intense but really gives us the opportunity to teach them about proper nutrition and fueling their body.

We got into motocross a few years ago and have been able to help several other families get started too which is really cool. We have met a lot of new friends and the community is AMAZING! It’s been a lot of fun and I don’t see us stopping anytime soon.

I try to keep my composure as I watch them but it’s hard. Not gonna lie. They LOVE it just as much as I love all the crazy things that I do so I cannot say no.

Adventures in Homeschooling

We have decided to homeschool Bailey for her freshman year. Well, we’re not really homeschooling but we are doing online public school. It’s a little bit different. So far so good! We are going through K12’s Texas Virtual Academy. It’s basically an online charter school. And it’s free!

She has teachers for each subject, classes are via video, and I log her attendance daily. She “goes to school” Monday through Thursday with Fridays being a makeup day. We’re able to join clubs, extra curricular groups, and she’ll have the opportunity to graduate early if that’s what she chooses to do.

Bailey has always been a great student but started struggling a bit starting in 7th grade. After a lot of thought and discussion, we decided to give online school a shot. We might go back to public school for 10th grade and we might not. Who knows! We are taking this one week at a time.

We are currently only a week into it but I think it’s going to be great for her! I’ll definitely be sharing more on this over the next several months so stay tuned!

So, that’s what’s happening over here! I definitely lead a busy scheduled life but it’s full of FUN stuff as you can see! Meet Carb Queen Sidonie

I met British bombshell Sidonie at Fired Up Fitness! She had recently moved to the states and had been coming to different workout classes and making great progress with her fitness goals. She started the Carb Queen program to learn about carb cycling and kick-start healthier eating habits. I asked her why she decided to become a Carb Queen and here’s what she had to say…

“I’m an English girl living in Texas and couldn’t be any happier! I workout at Fired Up Fitness and love getting my sweat on as much as possible during the week. I’m doing this for a few reasons. I have family visiting, birthdays to celebrate, and holidays! This means I’ve fallen into some bad eating habits. I think this program is going to help me learn a better way of eating to live a healthier life. I’m hoping for weight loss too!”

It did not take long for Sidonie to become a Carb Queen pro! She had a good workout rhythm going and it took a week, maybe two, for her to catch on to as a Carb Queen.

When you hit a plateau with your progress that’s typically a good sign that it’s time to change it up and most likely clean up your nutrition. Your workouts should push you to eat better. I know that I can definitely feel the difference when I step into a workout.

What is Kroger ClickList?

It’s not that I don’t LOVE grocery shopping. I don’t mind it so much. But my schedule can be pretty tight sometimes and groceries are the last thing I really want to worry about. The thought of someone else grocery shopping for me and getting everything right sounds dreamy right? I would save HOURS if someone could take it off my plate.

The truth is I paid someone to do this for me for a while! And it WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT! In fact, I SAVED money because she would stick to the list where I would stray and end up with $50-$100 “extra” in my cart.

Then I discovered Kroger ClickList and took out the middle man so to speak. The thing that I love is the ease of use. The thought of compiling my grocery list for someone else sounded like a huge chore and is the reason I put off trying Kroger ClickList. But here’s the thing, if you have a Kroger card that you earn fuel points with Kroger tracks your frequent and recent purchases. It’s EASY to use!

I’ve heard good things about other services such as Amazon Fresh but have yet to try it out. There is a monthly subscription required and I found Kroger’s prices had them beat. I’m already in the area so it’s easy for me to pull in and pick up. Home delivery would be amazing if I was nowhere near the grocery store. For now, this works perfectly for me!

Step 1: Logon to the Kroger website and select ClickList. Scroll the suggested items and add items to your cart. Select your pick- up time and check out. Your pick-up time is an hour window and can be the same day in some instances. You can still use your coupons too! There’s a $4.95 fee to use this service. Again, I’d spend more than that on gum in the checkout line.

Step 2: Show up! You’ll pull into a parking spot usually on the side of the store and call the number on the sign. They’ll ask for your name and parking spot number. Then they’ll deliver your groceries, you pay, and then they load them up!

Step 3: Sit back and relax! You’re in and out in less than 10 minutes. TRY IT! Let me know if you do!
